How to identify bricks.

I’m a relative newcomer to Brickowl and I have a screen print of some bricks that I want to buy, attached, but I’m struggling to track them down as I’m not sure of the name or reference number of quite a few of them.

Is there an easy way of identifying each brick on Brickowl?

  • There's no easy way, other than from experience and getting the hang of what certain parts are called. That being said, using either (awesome) eyesight, a magnifying glass, or the zoom setting on your phone's camera, usually you can find the part # somewhere (it's very tiny). Another way is if you know that the element comes from a certain set, you can search for that set and then view the inventory, and find that part.

I'm sure though there are some well written guides online from others who talk about tips and tricks for learning the different tiles of parts like plates, jumpers, modified tile, etc... Once you know the general family of parts that it comes from, you can start getting a feel of what the naming might look like. For example, "Plate 2 x 2", "Plate with studs on the side", etc...
  • If this picture is from a MOC showing all parts that make perhaps the maker of said MOC has a parts list, this can be imported into a wishlist in order to buy the parts.

    Tyson.
  • Another trick is to search only for the dimensions (e.g. 2x2 or 1x2), then narrowing the search by colour (assuming you have a handle on colour names!). Scrolling through the results often helps and has the added advantage you might stumble upon other parts of a similar size/colour that you are after.

  • Wow, gold star to @Brick-Cat!!!!

Another option (for the future), if you know what set you are parting out, you can look at the set's inventory on this site (look by set name or number), which will link to all the set's contents - though note, for some older sets the inventory information is sparse (as is LEGO's own information for those old, awesome sets!). :-)
  • Thanks for all the help guys!
