How do you organize spare parts

Wondering how everyone else is managing spare parts from sets and extra random pieces. I was thinking about making an excel spreadsheet. I had a lot of sets that were donated to my wife’s classroom. That we ended up with when she moved school. We got about 11 sets with a lot of missing parts. Would be nice to figure out if I have some of these parts without going to all the spares. Let me know what your solutions are. Thanks

I think if you input those spares into a web site such as Rebrickable, the site will then tell you what sets you are "close" to assembling and what parts are missing (as well as where to buy them). :-)
