Please add refined search options

My inventory is getting messed up and I can't fix it easily without a better search option.

As I expand I need to physical move items to larger trays - physically it's easy - problem is changing the personal note on BO which is where I keep track of location of parts.

Ideally I need to be able to search in "Personal note" AND/OR search for exact phrase, every search I try gives me 200+ results, which means I have to scroll page by page, find the part number then search that number - very tiresome.

I'm stuck at the moment having to now remember where parts are, I can't be the only one with this problem, am I?

  • Wha kind of search terms are you struggling with at the moment?
  • I suppose the "exact phrase"

ie If I search Brick 1x4 all I want to get is any brick that has dimensions 1 x 4

slope 2x4 all I want is slopes with dimension 2x4

if I could search only personal note then that would help but again exact phrase would help as well

At the moment, unless i've missed something if I search my inventory for "brick 1 x4" I get anything with either the word "brick" or a "1" or a "4" which is just about everything…

    unless its a browser issue?

    Thanks!
  • More specific to the issue I am having: -

My inventory is allocated physical space using alpha-numerics

This works well for me, the problem is now I was starting to expand my stock, which means moving parts to larger compartments - I use RUB trays so all I do is change out a 16 compartment tray with 2 x 8, if the original 16 compartment tray was labeled as T-14, then it gets split to T-14 and T-14.1 as the two 8 compartment trays.

Sometimes I have to move things further.

What I really need badly is a way to search "personal remarks" for an exact match of say T-14 that pulls up all parts in that location ONLY.

I cannot add more inventory until I can do this, so I am stuck.

The reason is keeping track of all changes made by physically moving items, the only way is by finding the part number, which means searching for each part in the catalog/my inventory that WAS in that location, which means I would have had to remember past events - quite a few. Also some parts are not very easy to find so it is far too time consuming!

All I need is to be able to search in Personal remarks to solve this.

It would be much appreciated if you could make this happen.

    Thanks Graham
  • It's not the perfect solution, but you can put "t-14" in quotes, that seems to help
  • OK what do the quotes do?
  • Well it works! THANK YOU!!
  • OK what do the quotes do?
The search here seems to work on the same general principle as Google. That is, search a string and it will search for the unique components of that string. When searching 1x4, that phrase is a combination of letters and numbers and likely getting split up. When you put your search in quotes, it searches for that exact phrase without parsing.

    Cheers!
  • Well I guess I'm older than I realize - never new that - but got everything sorted now!

    - I Don't use google so maybe that's why?

I think Lawrence has this site optimized in chrome so that would sort of explain it…

It is not exactly like Google. For example, things in between quotes bring up exactly what is in them. In Google you could also use the - key to take things out.
    Example:
    "2x4" -plate

This should bring up every item that is a 2x4 except plates. This is how Google works but that does not work here.
