No rhyme or reason to order numbers?

Hello! Could someone explain what the system is, if there is one at all, for what number an order gets when it is placed? On bricklink, they just go in a row. 9999997, 9999998, 9999999, etc. But on brickowl they are all over the place. It makes it harder to find a specific order.

So is there any rhyme or reason to order numbers or are they just randomly pulled out of a digital hat?

My guess is still to avoid outsiders to know how many orders are made each day.
