Motors: Modern substitute for 9V motor (2838) 4x5 stud?

I have a few old Lego Technic sets such as 8094 and 8868 which include the rectangular 9V motor (2838) 4x5 stud. I've pulled them out of the loft and would like to build them with my own son now. Some of the motors sound a bit tired, others are OK.

This part is no longer made. Does anyone know if it's possible to substitute with a newer alternative?

    You can buy these motors from recently opened old sets. Unused and most work fine even after all this time, but you do get the odd one presenting problems. Sometimes they simply don't work at all (seized usually). They sell for around €10 each in my experience and most good sellers will happily refund if you end up with a dodgy one (some may even test before despatch).
