Roman Standard Bearer.

Help please.
I am trying to make a standard Bearer but have hit a snag, this is my concept design before i buy the appropiate coloured pieces.
I can figure out a way to get the top part with the flag to sit on the top of the pole.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Couldn't you use two 1x1 plates with handle and another 2 with clips to hold it onto the bar?

unfortunatly i am not well versed in lego parts, i googles what you said but dont understand how that would work? please elaborate ?
