How does this “scam” work? - if it is...

A couple weeks ago eBay ran a coupon 20% off any purchase with max redemption of $100.
I found a Falcon for $770 delivered, with $100 coupon came to $670 delivered!

It took some time to get here, but I got it.

inside was a packing slip from another ebayer sales price was $840 + shipping. This ebayer sent it to the address that it was sent to me from, a week later...
Two different eBay accounts at same address, same last name different first name.
Why would someone buy it, then sell it a week later using a different account and loose $100?

I looked up the address on google earth, it’s a nice house in an “upscale neighborhood” it can’t be credit card fraud unless they are really stupid!
This seller sold 3 at that price.

Any ideas?

  • Why do you assume its fraud? I sometime sell things at a loss when I need quick cash.
  • hmmm, a couple things come to mind. did a hacker do an "account takeover" of a legit ebay account to make themself look like a longtime legit seller with good feedback ?

Did you examine the Falcon ? is it a counterfeit ? stolen set maybe ( there was a recent fencing operation busted in Oregon so these things do happen )

otherwise, lucky you for getting a good deal.

I didn't assume anything. Its just odd flipping something at a loss of $100 in one week! Also they sold 3 at the same price.

Frankly I don't know, hence asking, if its counterfeit they did a 100% job, the set is still sealed inside the (LEGO) shipping box.

Just strange using one eBay name to buy and another to sell, a week later, both at the same address with same last name.
Perhaps parents away, kids get mums credit card... that would add up, I pray that's not case! We'll see.
  • i went back and looked at the crime scene photos from the Oregon USA case. The photos are posted online. GOOGLE "oregon lego crime scene photos". Anyway many of the stolen sets in this May 2018 case were Starwars and all appeared to be still boxed.

i'm still hoping you got a good deal BUT there are some dirty people out there.
  • Anyone know if Oregon guy had a presence here or on BL?
  • The only scam I can think of besides stolen merchandise is that the falcon was purchased to be resold. Then the seller put in a paypal claim from the original sale that it was counterfeit or an empty box (SNAD). They get money back and the sale, probably 2 paypal accounts as well. That receipt could be evidence.
  • He might have drop shipped it on you. God knows what the payed or how many other sets / services or other favors he got. He could also be in need of cash flow or simple found it too hot too handle (stolen) and wanted to get rid of it. There is plenty of reasons :D If you can not prove it you can not judge it :)

That sounds a possibility, it was 2 eBay accounts so would be 2 PayPal accounts, guess I’ll hold onto the paperwork
