Gift Cards

What does everyone think about brickowl having gift cards?

With Christmas nearing in the USA, it will soon be buying season for kids. A parent or grandparent knows their child likes Lego toys. They come across BrickOwl and search for a gift card to give to their loved one because they have no idea what they would like or what sets they might already own.

Another use for gift cards would be for drawing and to win things. Example: At a toy show and have people sign-up and win lets say a $50 BrickOwl gift card.

I'd love to receive a BrickOwl gift card.

I also wouldn't be at all shocked if Lawrence had no interest, given that he'd have to collect the money and then dole it out to the sellers, which is rather backwards from the usual model.

Alternative suggestion, to capture that gift market: Money holder cards (could be print and fold your own) that tell the recipient how he/she can spend the money in the card at BrickOwl. There are a couple of simple templates here: https://www.google.com/search?q=money+holder+card+template&rlz=1C1CHMO_enUS540US540&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=DdZOUvipHMep4APxwIGwDA&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1215&bih=836&dpr=1 Add Brick Owl logo, URL, and some text, and go?
  • I don't think it would be to hard once created. It can all be automated. A link on the home page to buy a gift card. The buyer pays with PayPal/Stripe and BrickOwl kicks out a random 16digit code. Also, once the random code is dispersed, the code is then on a "do not give out this number again" list for the key generator.

During the checkout process for buyers, they could then enter their 16digit code at the end and the number they type in will be verified with the key bank to make sure it is legitimate. I think it may be slightly difficult to do but a large benefit for BrickOwl.

  • I have considered gift cards, I could do them on a per store basis but that does have the risk of confusing people if they think it will work in any store. As correctly identified above, I would then have to start handling payment. If I did that, there would then be VAT issues and double payment fees.
