@lucus Alltough the current line was patented 60 years ago by LEGO (reason 1958 is used as 'reference' year), binding bricks are much older, The Lego Company actually started earlier on with 'binding bricks' (as of 1949), initially with very poor 'binding' results, but that's just a sidenote, as what we know today wasn't even invented by TLG, but by Hilary Fisher Page (UK) and her Kiddicraft line (aka Self Locking Building Bricks). The year of her patent was 1940...
In 1981 TLG bought the Kiddicraft residual rights, just to make sure they could not be slammed with copyright issues. TLG's 'brick' patent expired in 2008, reason we see so many 'clones' nowadays (as long those are not an exact copy of what TLG creates, there is no issue), but based on history, LEGO is a 'clone' as well ROFLMAO
