I've seen these too and they seem to appear on older pieces, particularly bricks. I assume they are remnants of an older production process which has now been improved. Anybody else have a theory? James
It is the mould pip indeed, and with earlier plastics the mould shrinkage will appear as a round or oval, slightly lighter colored.
Even new larger parts will get it over time, but much less as the early parts. The combination of current ABS and knowledge makes shrinkage almost gone. This is the same reason why LEGO dont make large plates with injection moulding, but via high pressure thermo forming :-)
