Sales question for BrickOwl only sellers - where has the business gone?

I'm now on Brick Owl (only) over 4 years.

2014 was very rewarding, other than the amount of taxes I had to pay.

2015 and 2016 only half years, due to moving, so nothing to really look at.

This year, so far, is disappointing to say the least - sales (in dollar value and number of orders) January to end of September, are down ±40% from same period in 2014, this despite having a much more comprehensive inventory, and prices about 20% lower.

Just curious if other BrickOwl only sellers are experiencing similar, if anyone wishes to discuss that is?

  • There is an oversupply of sellers and parts for the demand, but that isn't limited or specific to BrickOwl.

Since 2015, the demand/supply ratio has basically been cut in half. Demand isn't growing as fast as seller inventories, and prices have fallen by 20% in the same period. Derivatives indicate that the oversupply and price drop will continue.

    Tough times, eh.
  • Oversupply doesn't last forever. If sellers get disillusioned and sell up and new sellers don't come along because of forum posts like this one, then oversupply can shrink.
  • Thanks for the insight. I suspected that might be the case. I wonder how those who do this as a sole source of income are doing.
Almost 10 years for me now, after my best year 2014, I was considering "going for it" properly. I think I will maintain the status quo and ride it out. Something will have to give in the end. I don't see how prices can drop much further.
I am going into something completely different next year, but don't plan on quitting - my 12 yo son wants to take it on later.

In the meantime buyers must be enjoying this!
