It complements LEGO with Bluetooth as their LEGO IR systems is a bit lacking. I think was crowed founded a year or two ago and took off from there.
  • I experimented with SBrick in the early days as an alternative to power functions IR controllers. In some ways it is far superior, there is no permanently attached lead that can fail, it does not have to be visible to function and it can run more than one motor through a single port.
On the down side, it can be fiddly to set up if your device is a little older and not every device is compatible. A degree of know how is required to use Bluetooth devices. The early device that I had also had a strange glitch in that it ran faster in reverse that it did forwards, no matter that way around a motor was put.
At around fifty pounds, it was a lot of money to invest in what was basically building a lego remote control system. It did have far greater range than the Lego IR system, but was often less reliable.

Another system is currently being developed by another group that has the unit combined with a rechargeable battery pack, this looks interesting because it has programable power delivery functions.

The usability of these devices all depends on how may times you build a remote controlled model. Personally, I went back to Power Functions for my models, like my Sherp ATV in this video.
