Two versions of LEGO Set 2556 (sticker) ?

Just sold a sticker for 2556
http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-sticker-sheet-for-set-2556-72535

And noticed that the picture is slightly different from what I have on hand
https://s16.postimg.org/k0uju9br5/image.jpg

Also, even though I have not looked extremely throroughly, BO is the single place where I found the BO catalog version of the picture (sticker).

Printed sticker ID is exactly the same on both.

Anyone knows something about this?

  • Pretty much all online resources agree with you, the Brick Owl picture is odd. This was a promo set though, and there may have been a production change giving two versions of the sticker sheet. This is unlikely though. The arched stickers don't seem to appear on the model, the Nrick Owl linked pdf instructions don't show them.

I downloaded the image and started enlarging, particulary the right side and bottom.
I'm 99% certain it's a faked image. If one looks at the top and left, one can clearly distinct the cutlines (also around the barred Shell stickers) of the stickers that are correct in place, but soon you look at the right side and bottom, those cutlines are faded and in some cases the way the stickers are posititioned on the 'fake' sheet are not on horizontal lines or vertical lines, while LEGO's designs are usually with that intend: make precuts along 'lines' as much as possible (particulary 20 years ago). Now why would LEGO put one of the blues striped stickers under the Ferrari logo and 'de-center' it and do the same thing again with the other identical sticker... Now I'm not saying the sticker is fake, it is possible someone deliberatly 'altered' the image to avoid actual reproductions, maybe the reason the Shell logos have been barred with red marker as well and the appearance of the 'arched' stickers...
My advise: Lucas, if you still have the sticker: make a scan and upload it on BO please, or upload the image you posted online, best option to avoid future questions.

Interesting.. Thank you for your input!

I do not think the BO picture is faked, though. First - apologies for my small image, not sure why it's showing that way. Lets try a little differently, apologies for ads:

Cutlines are positioned just as randomly on my sticker, as they are on BO. Although I must agree that the choice of grouping (or lack of) of similar graphics is extra weird on the BO version. What does catch my eye, though, is the mispositioned green color on the larger Ferrari logo (the one that's rotated horizontally). Too much green, no white. While on the one that's vertical it's the opposite - little green, lots of white.. That's so not LEGO-like. OR.. was it rather common, 20 years ago?

To check for cutlines convert the BO image to Grayscale, they show up really well

except maybe the ones on white color, they are visible a bit better after inverting the colors to negative

On the negative, one can also check how the black (originally white) background ever so slightly, but also consistently and uniformely fades from top right to lower left. If someone was faking the image, they'd be cutting and pasting. The different shade blocks would be very easy to spot on the negative. No way they would get this so well, or put in a ginormous amount of effort to achieve it?

Eric: sure, I can add the secondary image, although I only have a single shot of it, and it was the last sticker that I had (and it was not even done by me - my assistant was in charge of that). Was not taken with it being catalog-worthy in mind, but maybe we can make it work :)

But what's more important - I do think that BO image is real. If it actually is, then it's an interesting piece of history. One that must be preserved! Again, I have not spent hours upon hours checking all the possible places for traces of an alternate Set box / sticker design, but did check a number of websites, auctions etc etc. The "common" version everywhere.
