"Active Carts" auto-reduction?

Just wondering does the number of active carts reduce after a particular timeframe or only when the buyer empties their cart or completes their order? I am wondering as my active cart number seems to go from 20's - 60's - 20's - 60's on an almost weekly cycle.

I can't remember how long the timeframe is, but if you hover over the statistic, I believe it should tell you the timeframe of the figure.

Doh!! Never thought of looking there @Lawence, it's 7 days, so I was right thinking it was a weekly cycle, at least I worked it out correctly anyway :-)
