PLEASE Add USA shipping method by State/zip code

PLEASE PLEASE

I don't see why it's a problem - @Lawrence you have zip codes in the database for tax purposes, why can't you do the same for shipping?

At the moment my only safe option once an order goes over the weight for first class - is Priority Flat Rate

The difference in price between a "normal" priority 2 pound package is 10 bucks (less than $7 local to more than $16 far away) therefore the only "safe" option is the Flat Rate devices

If there is some reason why you can't implement using zip codes, then please at least allow a drop down by State.
Consider that each state is a "Country" if you will.

Thank You

  • We did look into it a few months ago but it would cause issues with all the shipping rate information shown everywhere prior to checkout as we don't know the users zip/state until they login or start going through checkout. The most we know about users is their country. It may be worth us having another think if there's a way we can deal with that.
  • A lot of web based commercial sites only provide shipping cost once the customer provides the shipping zip code.

A quick(ish) workaround might be to add the states as countries, and every time a store updates their shipping rates, cache the lowest price from all those set against USA and the individual states, and then display "from {cache}" as the shipping rate for visitors with a US IP address.

Non-US stores would only set rates for the USA, and US stores could set rates for either the US as a whole or for individual states.
  • State is not really good either, some States are covered with 3 shipping zones, so 3 rates.
It is more expensive to ship in the South and West of Colorado than it is to ship in Wyoming, Kansas or Nebraska.

  • @Lawrence There must be a way - there are thousands of e-commerce websites that have it sorted

if your only concern is visitors, then perhaps require a visitor to select destination zip to see shipping rates? Really best if you had them log in or set up an account!

@Colorado Bricks 3 shipping zones is a lot better than what we have now!
