Question about Order Numbers

This is just out of sheer curiosity: why do the order numbers skip around? I'm sure there's a quick and simple answer, but I haven't been able to figure it out.

Why not?

I actually prefer it that way, there's less risk of mistaking two numbers that are identical except for one digit.

On of the reason could be so that no one can estimate how many orders per day/week like it is done on BL.

Agree with Colorado Bricks - it seems like a simple measure to keep site order statistics private to the site owners.
