Are there Buyer Protection measures in place that cover payment by bank transfer?
I've always preferred paypal but there's someone selling a set I want offering only bank transfers (Their limit for paypal transfer is higher than the cost of the item), and I was wondering if paying by bank transfer is just leaving myself open to the elements, so to speak.

Long answer: yes, if you're willing to seek redress via the courts. In short, there is no automatic protection like you'd get with PayPal, but you always have civil law to fall back on if a contract goes wrong. You could try emailing the seller and see if you can come to an arrangement to pay by your preferred method.
