Some where I found Lego plans for gingerbread locomotive. I'm almost certain it was referenced on the BrickOwl forum. Looks like it would be a nice Christmas decoration. The plans include a part list, 58 different items. I believe I want to build it.
The problem (as usual) is where to get these parts. So I tried the Wishlist & BuyTool. The BuyTool showed that the most any single store was 23 parts, and a large number of stores with less. With a bit of fiddling eventually got down to 2 parts left to order with no store having more than 1. Some items required multiple vendors to obtain the desired quantity.
It would seem more difficult since the plan use the reddish brown color to look like gingerbread. Just not a popular color, not all item are available.
As it stands, I've spent about $30 on parts to build the locomotive, 'bout $20 more to make the orders look respectable and $11 in minimum shipping from 5 vendors. (Thanks to Honey Creek for NO Shipping Charges promotion.)
Leaves me to ponder, could I have done as well without the BuyTool?
What if the BuyTool showed the extended value and potential shipping charges for every store before being selected? After-all computers are good at number crunching.
What if the BuyTool had a means to allow change of color – IE. Brown for Reddish Brown, or Dark Red for Red – would such an option reduce the number of vendors required thus reducing what approaches 40% Shipping?
There may well be more thoughts on improvement but I'm still on the fence as to if its any better than what I did in the past.
Thanks for reading – hope other people make use of the BuyTool and express an opinion.
