I was wondering...
Some time ago
@lawrence added in a feature that shows sellers on their order overview when an item has missing weight and/or dimension, quite a practical feature, as this should trigger sellers to adjust the database for these details. Not so long ago, I pointed out, that when printing the order, those lines where showing 'black' (so easy to miss again), quite quickly adjusted by admin Lawrence (thanks again), red on order forms (when printed) so all fine...
Except (offcourse there is one, otherwise I wouldn't be making a suggestion): buyers still checkout with items leading to an overrated shippingcost, because THEY don't have a clue about this... On regular bases I explain buyers to pay attention that if they end up with an 'exagerated' shippingcost, it is most likely due to an item with unknown dimensions and that they should check the catalog page and if missing, to request a quote from the seller in stead.
Now I was thinking, wouldn't it be more logical *IF* a cart has at least 1 item with missing dimensions *THEN* the buyer would get a site message stating this (during checkout), with the indication it would be preferable to request a quote in stead of selecting a shippingmethod? In the long run (if people actively submit details), this would fade out, but it would be very usefull to notify buyers of this IMHO, as it's oftenly a timewaster to recalculate and refund the difference, not to mention the risk of buyers clearing their full cart just because it show 'very high' on shipping because 1 or 2 items, while there might be no reason at all (so sellers are actually 'losing' orders because of it).
Could such be put in place?
Cheers (& nice weekend to all), Eric

not really, if you put in efforts to submit details from your own store inventory, then technicly you wouln't have the issue all that much, and each submission would also serve other sellers (and yourself in the long run). The number of orders I need to refund a shipping is dropping, because I regulary spend time to adjust the database, and that's the whole idea: if a buyer is invited to request a quote, it will hopefully trigger the seller to browse the buyers cart and realise there is missing data, and so the seller can anticipate, provide a quote (so less work) AND adjust the database.
Sitting around and do nothing won't help anyone :P
I vouch for Lawrence on sizes and weight submissions approvals, these are approved fairly quickly (and are much more crucial for a site like this compared to inventory changes or items to be added/changed - and rest assured I have hundreds of those pending myself LOL-)
How do I know what submission are pending ?
well, as Lawrence keeps up-to-date on those, usually not many ;-)
The chances 2 (or more) contributors would sumbit the same data, within the same day is also fairly slim, so you shouldn't worry too much about pending stuff, after all there are over 35.000 items with missing dimensions and 26.000 missing weights :P
Personally I always work with my orders, if I notice data is missing, then I submit it after picking.
Once in a while I submit data in batches (with Bricksync), mainly minifigs details, as they can be copied from one to another, but that's usually older ones.
And sometimes I pick a storage box, empty it out and start going over the content, obviously not storage boxes with standard stuff (bricks plates slopes) as most sizes got converted from bricksizes (allthough a little check doesn't hurt), but I take boxes with more particular stuff.
I recommend the use of a VERNIER CALIPER as it works fast and easy and it is very presice (allthough the latter is less important, as in most cases you need to 'round' the values anyway).
Minifig details are very important, not only because a lot of data is missing on those, but they are also usually making autocalculations jump up, so that might be a good starting point (and obviously anything you are selling is important for your own runnings).
