Lost instructions: Find out from what sets a collection of parts could origin

I almost finished rebuilding my Lego collection from the 90s. There are still many special parts left, like base plates for vehicles, hinges, seats, a prison door, and so on. It seems that I have lost the instructions for several sets. Is there a good strategy to find out which sets this could be, just from having the parts? I'm awara that this is probably only possible for more specific parts.

I browsed in old catalogues, this helped me to find and reconstruct several vehicles, but I can not find matching sets to the parts that are still unused.

  • If you can find the parts in Brick Owl then it should give you a list of which sets use those parts. Unfortunately the catalogue isn't complete and the gaps in information get bigger the further back you go. A good alternative is www.rebrickable.com - again, you'll need to begin by finding the parts in their database.

You could always upload an image of the parts here and maybe someone can help.
  • Mibieri,

When I was doing the same a few years ago I used www.peeron.com by searching part numbers on the more specific parts then trying to match the set results with either sets I remembered having or sets I could pair other parts into. Some sets weren't economic to try to rebuild though and left me with 1000's of parts left over which led me to start selling here
