Auto-Save/Back Up when Parting-Out

Is it possible to have an auto-save/back-up when parting-out sets. I spent some time this morning parting-out a set to my store. I update the notes section as I go with the storage location for the parts. Having worked my way to near the end I accidentallly hit a key that took me back to the start of the part-out screen, losing all the work I'd done, as well as then not knowing which drawers the pieces were in. The drawers are random as I use whichever drawer I have space in or is empty to store the new lots.

Somewhat frustrating and time consuming to have to find the pieces and enter all the info again.

Thanks

  • I've had a few part out go wrong in the past. Would be handy if possible.
  • I was always nervous that would happen to me. I would only do a couple of colors at a time.
  • Too all of the people with this happening, I would simply recommend BrickStock. It baffles my mind that there are still people against using this program!

It's pretty easy to learn in fundamentals and you can do all of that and a lot more, save everything, continue the next day, whatever. If you need any help HMU.
  • What Brick_Top says... I can't imagine running my store without it. Make sure to update the database on a regular base.
  • BrickStock isn't as helpful for EU sellers because it saves in $, while the BO import function assumes you're importing in the currency of your store, which in the EU would be £ or € usually. This means you need to import the XML into an editor or Excel and edit it accordingly. Plus, BS is set up primarily for BL with its many (in some cases superfluous) variants and differing part numbers; there are 1000s of parts on BO that need the BL ID attaching, and this is especially true for newer sets I think, so 'parting-out' via BS can actually end up being more work.
  • @Hoddie I think BLID resolution should be fairly complete, there's even automated software cross-referencing databases to submit new BLIDs. :) I haven't gone through stickered parts and minifig parts though, and the latest 2015 sets may not have been included in the last batch...

I'm sure an autosave would help, but I would still recommend local software over any website.
  • I have some BLIDs outstanding for weeks if not months (not certain). Seems everything else gets approved within a week but these hang around forever. Without these it's a real pain using BS, not least because of the currency issue, but more so because you have to manually trawl through parts and add those that weren't updated automatically with the import. This leaves plenty room for error.
  • I'm not a complete computer novice but I've taken a look at Brickstock and I just couldn't get to grips with it. I was in fear of making inventory errors. With Brick Owl it's as easy as it gets, bring up the part-out list check everything, hit submit. There is no download/upload XML, etc. Sometimes I don't understand even the computer/software language that is used in the forums so I cannot see myself navigating the programs myself without making any inventory errors when uploading.

Yes there are alternatives you can use when updating/maintaining inventory but Brick Owl can be made better, i.e. the autosave for those who use it for parting-out.

May be I need a very user-friendly guide on how to use Brickstock?

    Thanks
  • Maybe if I get some time I should make a quick brickstock guide. It really is very simple once you know the concepts. @Hoddie was a problem I had in the beginning, but I fixed it quickly. If you are going to export, don't do anything as, even if it shows dollars, it just exports the number, so it will be the currency of your store.

If you want to put prices to averages, it does download the averages in USD, but all you need to do after you select all and put them at average, is select all again and decrease the price by a % so it matches the other currency.

For example, right now, 1 USD = 0,88 EUR, so you would decrease prices by 12% if you wanted to convert the dollars amount to euros.

Ask away if I haven't explained myself properly.

It really is easy, and worth.
  • Yeah I hadn't considered doing it that way. So simple :)

I was importing prices using BS's in-built currency converter, and noticed that when it saved it converted the prices back into $ because presumably this is what BL expects to be imported. I never considered leaving it as $ and just reducing/increasing as appropriate. This will save me a lot of time, thanks.
  • Actually one last thing, is there any way to round to two decimal places within BS?
  • No, no, don't use the included currency thing as it's broken, I think. Even if you upload for bricklink. Yes to the other question, you can use edit -> price and round to 2 decimals. Or just rightclick -> price.
  • It's my turn.
    Clicking verify and nothing happens.
Been doing this one on and off throughout the day.
    I wonder if it's a time problem?
  • Button just greys out for a few seconds and then nothing.
Does the same with he advanced button and the break button on a minifigure.
  • I've parted out a couple of sets today and no problems my end. There was a slight lag when breaking the figs but otherwise ok.
  • I did it again and if worked fine.
Had it open for about 8 hours so was maybe a time thing.
I could change prices and open links.
  • There is a time limit on forms, it might be 6 hours
  • I have noticed more lag than usual yesterday night and got into one issue where after selecting the condition combo box nothing happened.
