Auto-populate inventory with weight category

I sell boxes. Unfortunately the packaging needed to safely ship boxes is way more than the buffer I've set in my shipping methods. I'd like to bump "My Weight" of the boxes by several ounces each to account for the packaging. When I go to inventory -> advanced, there is a weight field but it is blank. I don't want to go to each item, hit edit, scroll down to find the weight of all the boxes. Can I have the system auto-populate the field for me? Then I can see what it is, change to my weight, and be done. Maybe if the field has a user entered weight, it could look different than an auto-populated field so we'd know if it was a true weight or a mitigated weight.

Exposing custom weight values through the API would be nice, it would also allow that kind of automated operation.

Good idea, that's now been done, using a placeholder which looks different to when you have a value entered
