Media Mail For Instruction Books

I'd like to have a way to choose only certain categories of items when setting up shipping methods. I believe this would be useful. For example, sellers could set up a Media Mail option that would only be shown when the customer orders Instruction Books. I'm sure there would be some issues. Any thoughts on this?

  • Probably not worth it for UK, by the time packaging is added to the instruction manual its over 5mm putting into a large letter size 5-25mm. That's if the weight hasn't already done so.
Maybe for stickers but you could set that up anyway. Items under x weight/size.
  • In my experience, Instruction books are rarely all that is in the order. To use Media Mail, all of the items must be books magazines or other forms on literature. So if the instruction book is ordered along with Lego parts; it can not be shipped using Media Mail.
  • Not to mention that media mail can take a long time, sometimes weeks to be delivered. I doubt customers want to wait that long for a product even if the shipping would be slightly cheaper. I recommend charging for flat rate envelopes or something like that to help with speed and cost.
  • I think the larger point is to be able to tag items for only specific types of mailings. Or to offer extra types of mailings for specific items.
  • My thought is to be able to use Media Mail when an order contains only instruction books. The books can be quite heavy, especially for larger sets and it could potentially save a decent amount of money in shipping costs for the customer. The expense of shipping instruction books is one of the main reasons customers hardly ever buy them.
  • If Lawrence wants to implement this, my suggestion would be to make a "Paper only" flag for shipping methods. If set, then that shipping method could only be used when the order contains only instructions or stickers.
