I believe BrickOwl has avoided scammers so far, perhaps mostly through Lawrence's unfailing vigilance. That being said, there's another LEGO marketplace where stories of people getting caught by scammers turn up way too frequently, and it shows the dangers of a system with no built-in safeguards.
I think it would be wise to preemptively defend BrickOwl against future potential scammers.
Obviously, payment methods with buyer protection (PayPal) could be required for all new sellers. A maximum total value for all orders in a not-yet-received status could also be enforced. Such limits could be lifted manually, or even progressively by an algorithm looking at all past and pending transactions.
Thoughts anyone?
