'make offer' as price option

Could we have an option 'make offer', either instead of a listed price or as supplementary option for high priced items? This would be a good solution for very rare items which can for the moment only be found in auctions or at very high price on BL (or mouth to mouth between collectors).

Although a few people have mentioned this before, it is something to consider much later in the websites development as the messaging system handles this use case fairly well at the moment.
