How to handle unknown part variations in inventories?

I recently inventoried a few older space sets on here. Some of them have parts that are available in different variations but due to the age of the sets I was unsure which variation to include so I added the generic part.

Example:
Set 6811 Pulsar Charger
http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-pulsar-charger-set-6811

Parts
http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-radio-undetermined
http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-radiator-grille-1-x-2
http://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-plate-1-x-1-with-holder

The rest of the inventory was accepted but these parts weren't so at the moment the inventory is incomplete.

How should parts like this be handled? It is unlikely many people will be willing to open sealed sets that are this old so finding out which variation was originally in the set will be near impossible.

  • Best thing to do would be to add both variations. Undetermined parts will be removed from the catalog over time. They will then be set up as alternates automatically,
  • Well... according to the image in the entry, it looks to me like:

    radiator grille without groove
plate 1x1 with holder, thin 'o'

As for the radio, both were in existence when this set was produced so you could put a variant on that one. But in reality I believe the grooved tile and other clip variants were in use as well.

  • Thanx for the response Lawrence.

This set (and the others that I have been inventorying) are all in the cross over time period for the grilles and radios, I believe it is likely that both came in the set at one time but have no proof of that. I just checked all the other online inventories I could think of (Peeron, Rebrickable etc...) and there are variations on which part is in each inventory.

I have gone ahead and added the variations that I could find in those other online inventories.
