Thermal Label Printer

Does anyone have any suggestions for a Thermal Laser Printer for my shipping labels?

I recently bought a Zebra LP 2844-Z. It seems to work when it wants to and only prints the labels when it wants to. When I first got it I had to replace the print head. No big deal that is the cost of buying used. That seemed to help but not fix the issues. I finally after wasting 250+ labels have gotten it to where it will occasionally print labels from Endicia. Half the time it prints the bar code and the red lights start flashing. When I try to use it in PayPal the print label button does nothing. I have the correct Zebra drivers installed, the correct widths and lengths in both spots, I have the correct Java runtime installed, etc... This thing has been a bad nightmare. At this point I am willing to just accept defeat, write it off, and start from scratch.

Any ideas are appreciated.

We use Dymo printers, we have the double wide one that accepts two rolls, we're happy with it, been using them for several years now. It's also compatible with Brick Owl but that's only useful if you don't use another shipping service.

What size rolls are usable in those? My concern is with my Laser printer the ink smears and rubs off by the time it gets to the customer. The PO says the smaller the label they are harder and sometimes impossible to scan. I looked into those as they are listed on PayPal's list of thermal printers that work with PayPal multi order shipping. I just wasn't sure as it looked like the max width was 2.5" which I thought sounded to small for a shipping label.

  • I'm not sure, it'll be available online, there is a wider version for big labels I don't use.
  • I use a Zebra LP-2844 and it works perfectly. I did have some problems with the initial setup with Stamps.com. There are some fixes for the driver and I can not find the website right now but I called Stamps.com customer service and they had the site and knew of the problem. I assume endica does too.

  • Seagull scientific is the website. Solved all my Zebra problems. The driver is apparantly different then the one you can get from Zebra.
  • Going to check it out now Thanks @Badlove

  • A friend of mine just got a Dymo Twin Turbo and really likes it. Is there a huge advantage to using the 4x6 labels over the smaller ones? Are the Twin Turbo labels too small to scan?

The smaller printers are just so much less expensive.

  • I have a Brother HL-2270DW. B&W Laser Jet.

I use 1/2 sheet 8.5" x 11" labels with the laser printer. Cost is about $0.05 per label. Much more expensive than what you can do with the Dymo type printers. But I have nowhere near the sales volume needed to overcome the purchase price of a printer dedicated to just labels.
  • We went the Zebra route, had the same problems as you even after calling tech support over and over. So then we got the Brother QL-1050 thermal which prints up to 4 x 6 inch labels which is what we use. 4 rolls of 100 feet each cost us $27 with shipping included. We print 50-100 labels a day and have used the same printer for over 2 years with no issues (knock on wood). It's compatible with Inkfrog and stamps.com, not sure if paypal or Ebay would work with it.

  • Actually, I saw this post by an accident when I was trying to search java bar code printer software for my bar code problem. However, I found that I am quite attracted by this question. Frankly, I've had somehow similar situation to the topic in this thread. The discussions here are helpful!
