How-question: Filling the gap when jumping or offsetting half a brick

Experienced builder, attempting my first MOC, and I'm stuck on something basic. I'm looking for suggestions for how to fill the half-brick gap created when I jump or offset from 5 studs to 4. Thank you in advance.
