Converting a wardrobe to store Lego

Hello. I'm finally... finally... going to try to get my collection out of the three big tote boxes most of it currently sits in, and organised into a sliding shelf container type arrangement. I have a wardrobe that should be ideal and originally thought I would fill it full of Artbin super satchels. But, they're not cheap and they're not readily available, anymore.

So I've been looking for alternatives. I looked at stuff from Ikea, but the Glis compartmented boxes seem to have gone and you just get tupperware style stuff with lids.

You can't adjust the internal compartments like you can on Artbins, but they're a lot cheaper and more available! Anyone used anything like this? Got any suggestions?

I can't suggest alternatives for a wardrobe because everything I use wouldn't have the depth necessary to make the most of the space. But I can tell you that I used to have a large compartment box and the problem I had with it was not being able to tip it up to get the pieces out of one compartment, because then it's all coming out. I ended up putting bags in each compartment so I could tip out an individual bag.

@Mrs Swoop Agreed! In our experience, compartment boxes aren't practical if used for smaller pieces, as those are pain to take out if – unless you use tweezers or a spoon. The ones we use are from IKEA and have rounded edges, which is very useful (image attached)

Hi @SpaceCadet , it's so great to hear you are expanding!

I used to use something similar for my smaller pieces (including cheese slopes, as Pikka showed), but when it comes to pieces like 1x1 round tiles, they are simply really challenging to pick out when you want a particular color or hit the bottom of the bin/sorter - even with long nails (yep, I'm a girl <s>).

I've ended up removing those after using them for several years and HATING pulling from them and transitioned parts to either the classic mini storage cabinets which numerous bins that are easy to up-end into your hand (e.g., https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LDH3JC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) or I prebag those smaller parts by color and store them in my large warehouse-type racks with pullout bins (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0086B4SE4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) or within cups in the bins (e.g., https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LDHF2W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

Another more unusual option - this is how I store all of my minifigures, which I prebag and tag so they don't damage each other in-bag and for easy ID - are the hanging bags pharmacies use to store meds awaiting pickup. They're terrific space-savers, to boot!
