Apparently, from what I have learned, cellophane is biodegradable and can be thrown in with compost. On searching I found cello baggies in most of the common sizes I (we?) use and hardly any more expensive than poly bags.
I bought a few to test them as packing for parts and will be switching over when I next stock up, which unfortunately will be some time away.
The pic is of a 2" x 3" they have a reclosable sticky strip, they are lighter and seem stronger than poly bags.

"Made of new polypropylene material (OPP), crystal clear, durable, keep your food fresh and tasty for longer and protect items from dampness or dust. "

"How to identify cellophane – cellophane or plastic?
The best way to do this safely is by folding the material-in-question. If it is cellophane, much like paper, it will remain folded. Plastics, on the other hand, will not act in this way. Another way to check if an item is cellophane is to check with the original supplier – the type of packaging should be clear on the listing if bought online."
