International Shipping - various questions

The last time I shipped internationally was ~2001. Since then, I have (sporadically) done a few orders to Canada, and mostly because USPS once exchanged international postal money orders with Canada Post. That is no longer the case. Most of the reasons I have not shipped outside the USA has to do with PayPal, and their dispute policies. Now that Stripe is available, and the Stripe implementation here supports split authorize/capture, I'm willing to give it a try. Initially I want to ship to Canada and possibly to the UK. Other countries will come later as my comfort level builds. I have a few questions.

1. Do address validation pages exist for Canada and the UK ? These are usually provided by the national postal service, and are a place where I can see if the provided address is a valid delivery point.

2. Have any other shipper ran into a problem with sealed sets being opened by customs ? I saw this happen once to Canada, and am aware that the UK HMRC discovered that someone was using sealed Duplo sets to import contraband. I expect customs to break the seals, and wonder how I get the buyers on the same page to expect it. As far as the possibility that the contents could be rifled then, that is a whole 'nother topic. Typically I do not expect that with Canada or the UK, but some countries I would be less confident.

3. Now that Stripe is available, I see that the Stripe implementation here supports several payment sources other than cards. Has anyone used them, and can comment about their usefulness or issues. I am aware that some of the payment sources available thru Stripe do not allow disputes. One such payment source is Alipay, but that is not on the list.

thanks in advance !

  • Regarding point 3: I think the Stripe payment sources other than creditcard, are often related to local or regional popular online banking methods. For example, the Stripe-iDeal implementation is focussed on buyers in the Netherlands to implement bank payments. These methods have (almost) no or limited possibilities for chargebacks.
    I have implemented all options:
    - Stripe-SOFORT: available for buyers in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands (low market share), Spain. An online direct payment method, based on the online banking environment of the buyer.
    - Stripe-Przelewy24: Available for buyers in Poland
    - Stripe-iDeal: Available for buyers in the Netherlands. An online direct payment method, based on the online banking environment of the buyer.
Stripe-giropay: Available for buyers in Germany. An online direct payment method, based on the online banking environment of the buyer.
    Stripe-bancontact: available in Belgium.

Besides the iDeal-payments (which is logical for me to have, since my store is based in the Netherlands), I only receive payments through the other methods a couple of times per year. But I think it is a great service to some buyers and it doesn't cost me anything to offer it.
