Am I correct in thinking that this would be possible via the API, but would not be possible via an XML update?

It's possible via neither at the moment I believe. I will turn it into a one-to-many structure later. What were you hoping to do with it?

I was hoping to include my own value for external lot ID in addition to BL's, so that I can move over to my own in due course. I'll need both during the transition.

Ah, I'm afraid we don't support having multiple at the moment. I do intend to overhaul the system in the next few months to handle support for other services like Amazon.
