What things do I need to know about starting to ship worldwide?

What things do I need to know about starting to ship worldwide from the US? I don't know anything about vats, what shipping methods to use, ect. please act like I don't know anything so that I can make sure I am doing this right.

    When I was mulling shipping worldwide, I did start with USPS and finding the restricted nations list; those show nations we should not be delivering products to due to sanctions, and as importantly, nations that have restrictions on importing certain products (most if it is biological matter, but I recall seeing one or two specifically calling out used toys, so it's worth a peek).

    Unfortunately I can't help further than that, as I decided it was not worth the labor (to generate the overseas paperwork every shipment)to me... :-) Good luck!
