Should Technic part names include the prefix "Technic "?

I wanted to seek the opinion of the community as to whether Technic Parts should have names that start with "LEGO Technic ". We currently have a variety and some members have tried to standardise this over the years. Please see https://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-parts/technic

  • I know that other places do include Technic in the name, but I've always found it redundant that it had it in the name when it was already under that category. That being said, I'd love to hear the other side of the discussion as to why people may prefer it.

At first I thought it might be a good idea so less experienced AFOLs who stumbled across the part, by whichever means, were more aware that this specific part is a Technic part (rather than a typical building element), but I can't think of a situation where I had an order that looked like it was a newer to LEGO buyer adding Technic randomly into their order. Most would be specifically looking for these parts and know what they are.

As long as the search works (which I tried - it does) where searching for like "Technic Beam" still shows all of the offerings, that's good enough and I don't think it needs to be in the name as it already belongs to the category.
  • @Lawrence

I feel both LEGO and technic are both unnecessary prefacing part names. Everything is LEGO and technic is considered a theme/category
... unless you are planning on adding other brands
  • I think it needs retaining for those items that are equipped on Technic figures, such as helmets, flippers, air tanks, etc. but otherwise no.
  • On this catalog it might not be needed as the search function is pretty good and typing technic shows all the items in that category.

My two penneth - I'm not sure.

I've heard the argument that having it means that all of the Technic pieces are together in lists which I understand but I don't really mind as long as the types are together, Beams, Axles etc, and to do that they need to be consistent.

And there's the argument that themed parts don't always make sense and are just a pain and while that is true for some of them I think that Technic stands apart as a far more significant theme. But it is still a theme and other themes aren't named in the item names. 93082 is a Knife not a Friend's Knife and do we care that it's a Friend's Knife? Do we care if it's a Technic Beam rather than a Beam?

So I still think I'm not fussed, but I would like it to be consistent.

Then again maybe I'd go with not having it, just to simplify the names. But if anyone wants to argue I'm not going to put up a fight.
  • Perplexing 6 months ago, when any buyers’ search we replicated for our “Store” or while looking at our “Inventory” for Technic, did not bring your up all parts for. This seems to be resolved now, even though specific parts do not have that term in the item name, even the category (looking at the edit tab and seeing many empty- eg. pneumatic...), or, as it seems themes cannot be in tags, not in a tag. Don’t know what has changed, but for the new-to-LEGO, searching Technic at BrickOwl or in our store will bring all relevant to their attention.
Intuitive is what we are striving for-🙂
  • I feel it is redundant given that it is part of the category name. Calling a pin a 'technic pin', when it is in the category Technic/pin for example.
  • It is a tough one - I find it easier to search Technics items when I include the word
  • I would say no. To me that like putting the word "animal" in the title of all animal items and "minifigure" in the title of all minifigures. It's redundant and not necessary. If all Technic items had that word in their title, what help would that be? You can already see all the technic items by going to the respective category.
  • I'm with what seems to be a growing majority - it's unnecessary, as it's the category. Like firestar said, by that argument, you'd precede every part name with their category. :-) I think there are exceptions that we can or already do build right into the item name, such as a Technic Figure or Helmet.

I think if Technic is the category, or it's in the original LEGO name, if you typed Technic it would still show up in search of that word, even if not in the BO display name.

BTW, I do agree with Graham in that every single item starting with LEGO also seems a bit unnecessary...

Just my respectful two cents for consideration, Lawrence! :-)
  • Do we have a verdict yet?
  • I like the prefix for some items. I removed it for others. It has benefits for SEO if people are searching on google for the prefixed name.

If people want to change names they can always suggest changes on the edit form.
