Challenge conflicting shipping addresses?

I have had more than a few orders where the shipping address on BO is different from PayPal.

So far I have caught them and shoot the customer a message, usually they want it sent to the address they provided BrickOwl.
However I have learned in life to NEVER assume anything!

This is now the 3rd time I have not received a response, after a couple days I will send to their PayPal address.

Further if you ship to a different address than provided by PayPal then you have zero protection.

All the customer need do is enter the correct shipping address on the PayPal check out screen.

I am not sure at what point BrickOwl sees the data, so either a challenge for "incorrect address" if before payment is completed or perhaps a Pop-up reminder before the re-direct to PayPal with something like "Please make sure you enter your correct shipping address on PayPal"

So far these have only been small orders - however for a large order I am not prepared to send to a different address and I am unsure what the outcome would be…

  • I've had a look at the PayPal options. I can not let them choose the shipping address at all, which would then mean they use the BO address, but that would probably not be "confirmed" so it wouldn't be eligible for seller protection. I may be able to access the address they have given before the order is put through, but trying to compare addresseses to work out if they are the same is notoriously difficult.
  • How about not giving "shipping address" or even "billing address" field when paying with PayPal?

PayPal always prompt me for an address if I don't select one when paying for goods.

Also it allows me to add an address as a "ship to" address.

The confirmed/verified status is only available in a few countries.

If you modify the shipping address to send to you get an alert that you are not covered at all - not that it ammounts to much - only covers you for non-receipt. However, that is one of the buyer fraud tricks - hasn't happened to me yet - -- BUT...
  • Not giving the customer the option to use their Brick Owl addresses wouldn't be a very good customer experience, especially as it would vary between shops as we are not a PayPal only website.

For non-US/CA I have now forced PayPal to use the Brick Owl address. US/CA requires the state code, I have added to the task list to change how our addressing system works for US/CA addresses.
  • Especially annoying when they confirm an address in St. Paul, MN but then won't let me print a label since the USPS approved version is "Saint Paul".

    Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Paypal?
  • I just shipped to St. Paul a couple weeks ago too. This was very annoying and ran into the same problem with them.
  • @Admin Thanks, sounds great to me! The off continent conflicts were the most worrisome and time intensive for me, the effort into the rest is appreciated too.
  • @Admin
Understand that (reply to post 3), and appreciate the amount of tasks you must have, however the interim suggestion in (2nd post) that it would only apply when selecting PayPal as payment method, even if it could be a pop reminder to enter the correct shipping address along the lines of your "have you double checked…"

As of the current order i've held it for 3 days no response so I will send to PayPal address, which is likely not what they want.

@DagsBricks - try entering addresses in Germany, France or Norway in Clik&Ship - they don't recognize ANY addresses with ß, ö ç à å in them

With regard US addresses how do they manage to "confirm" an address then tell you it's wrong when you try and ship to it? :O
  • It has been a while (like decade plus) since I setup paypal, but from what I recall the "confirmed" address was based on adding a bank card(debit/credit) which they could match the address to, thus they considered verifed. Or after x amount of days they will send you a verification by mail.

The problem with their shipping is they reference everything to the USPS standards. So what someone has on file with the bank and what they write on a daily basis, may not be the way the USPS stnadards would print it. Thus you end up with the same address, perhaps abbreviations, or syntax is off slighty, both would be delivered, but the computer doesn't consider them to be a match. Hope my reasoning made sense, do not feel like trying to figure out how to clarify it further.
  • … and so…

"computor says NO!" - in real life

… some will get it :)

@pumbaugh - I had one order that I near enough gave up on, finally discovered a "dot" that was misplaced!

@ Admin the "reminder" could be included in the check out flow, after selecting PayPal perhaps? - You already have the box "you will be redirected to paypal" - in there maybe?

  • @Admin - having taken notes on checking out - (as previous post) on payment information screen - when selecting "PayPal" you get the box "You will be redirected to the PayPal website."
could you add the address reminder in that box?

When redirected to PayPal on the "Review your information" screen you have the option to change shipping address.

Or that box could simply state that "your order will be shipped to the address you supply/select on PayPal" - anyone who has used eBay will be familiar with that...

  • Hi Graham

This issue will be resolved when I change the addressing system to handle US/CA states.
  • Ah thanks Lawrence
