Help to identify this fabric piece please

It's a fabric piece - you can see the weave on one side, and the reverse is some kind of smooth coating?

The colour is brownish on the "weave" side, and brown-greyish on the "reverse" side.

My first guess was that it's some sort of clothing piece - but the hole placement makes me think it isn't - can't work as a cape, and can't fit minifig arms through both at same time.

Any ideas?

Sometimes when you have holes like that it twists together so the holes come together and something goes through both at the same time

How do you mean 'can't fit minifig arms through both at same time'? Are they too close together?

Yep, too close together - can't pull it enough to get onto both arms.

RE the twisting together - the capes of that type have additional cuts to allow that (eg: https://www.brickowl.com/catalog/lego-standard-cape-with-regular-starched-texture-20458-50231) but this one doesn't

Yes, I know what you mean about the slits. You know the arms come off though?

yes, but surely Lego wouldn't design an accessory so that you had to take the arms off to put it on/take it off? Also just looked again and the fit on the arms is not right - wouldn't allow for full range of movement - so I'm almost certain it's not supposed to fit over the arms.

Isn't that the upper piece of a cloak? Not for the back but behind the head? Forcing both holes over the head pin creates a crease which helps keep the material upwards around the back of the head?

@Hoddie I know what you mean, but it just doesn't fold that way. I'm wondering if it's actually official Lego at all.

Found several off brand for sale. Looks like it’s a trench coat.

That is definitely a custom trench coat, they are used by minifigure customisers who are used to pulling arms of off figures carefully.
