In the larger community not as much as say basic parts, BUT I have found its enough of a profitable niche that I go out of my way to stock Bionicle - I sell a surprising amount! I suspect a lot of sellers don't care to as it is a space-eater in your stock area. :-)
I have a fair number of parts, and have a small quantity of sets. Personally they do nothing for me, but I understand they are credited for LEGO's turnaround a few years back so they must have a following. I often find that when I accumulate joblots that I never have all the parts to complete a set (often missing things like projectiles), so they end up going into my inventory as loose lots. Given their design I would have thought they have limited usage outside of Bionicle or Hero Factory themes, but that said MOCers have a habit of coming up with unique techniques and designs, so wouldn't be surprised to see them used in weird and wonderful ways!
My experience is that selling the Bionicle sets is quite difficult. I have listed so many times Bionicle sets on different pages, but I have never sold them. If I just put the single items on the selling list, they are sold relatevely quickly. Not all of them, but a lot. As long as I have the space for these parts, it's a nice additional business.
