What difference is there between "merge using new external id" and "merge using existing external id"

I comprehend the words but not the functionality.

This in relation both to lots already in inventory and new lots added.

When it merges an item, it either uses the existing external id, or the new one you just supplied in the file.

Thanks that I get but what is the reason for selecting one or the other?

In what circumstance would they differ?

I would like to preserve external id purely to be able to utilise BS

Maybe if you upload a file with a blank id, and you want to keep the existing id instead of setting it to blank. Personally I don't use that setting.
